History of the Holy Spirit Missionary Association
First evidence of the Holy Spirit Missionary Association was in 1921, when the HS Hilswerk was founded by the general administration of the Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters in Steyl, Holland, for the purpose of financially supporting their missionary work.
To honor the Holy Spirit, in 1957 the sisters in Steyl, Holland founded the Holy Spirit Missionary Association. Each time, the HSMA met the approval of the local bishop, which canonically established it as a "Pia Unio" (Pious Union).
